Last Call for Applications – Closing Soon – NZ History Awards and Oral History Awards

Manatū Taonga Ministry for Culture and Heritage administers two annual history awards – the Ngā Kōrero Taonga Tuku Iho Oral History Awards and the History Awards. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 round of the Oral History Awards was delayed. This means both of our Awards are closing at the same time this year – 15 October 2020. We are now inviting applications for both Awards.

Ngā Kōrero Taonga Tuku Iho Oral History Awards

The Ngā Kōrero Tuku Iho, New Zealand Oral History Awards provide financial help for the recording of interviews relating to the history of New Zealand/Aotearoa and its close connections with the Pacific. Projects submitted for consideration should contribute significantly to our understanding of New Zealand’s past and its people. Awards are given as a contribution towards the cost of recording interviews for oral history projects, including training, travel, the purchase of good quality audio and/or video recording equipment and other expenses.

Awards may be made to individuals or groups with a community-led project. Preference will be given to people with proven experience of successfully completing oral history projects or who have completed training in oral history or have experience in oral traditions.

History Awards

The History Awards, funded by the New Zealand History Research Trust Fund, supports historians, researchers and writers working on non-fiction projects that will significantly enhance our understanding of New Zealand’s past. Traditionally, we have supported book or web projects with a wide target readership, rather than journal articles.

Any individual or group can apply. We are particularly keen to receive applications for projects dealing with Māori topics. The funding can be used for any expenses to do with the researching and writing process, such as travel costs, paying yourself a wage, equipment costs and research costs.
