The New Zealand Historical Association acknowledges with sadness the passing of Dr Apirana Tuahae Kaukapakapa Mahuika and pays tribute to this distinguished and outstanding man.

As a scholar and teacher Apirana Mahuika played a leading role in the intellectual life of Aotearoa-New Zealand over many decades. A towering figure in Ngati Porou, Mahuika was an influential thinker in shaping understandings of New Zealand and New Zealanders, Maori and Pakeha. In November 2011 Mahuika gave the inaugural Wiremu Maihi Te Rangikaheke Lecture at the New Zealand Historical Association Conference at the University of Waikato.
