The Service and Food Workers’ Union and Kristine Bartlett’s very successful equal pay for equal work case won significant pay rises for low-waged, predominantly working-class women, a significant number of whom are migrant workers. This case put the ‘gender pay gap’ firmly on the political agenda and has inspired campaigns for ‘equal pay’ across the union movement, including Treat Her Right; Worth 100%. In this panel discussion we put the ‘gender pay gap’ into conversation with other barriers to employment and fair wages, and explore past and present campaigns to address intersecting structural inequalities and demand change.

About the speakers:

Cybèle Locke is a New Zealand history lecturer at Victoria University of Wellington.   She is a labour historian, with a particular focus on women and Māori involvement in the labour movement.  She is involved in the Living Wage Aotearoa movement and is a delegate for the TEU at Victoria University.

Kassie Hartendorp (Ngāti Raukawa) grew up in Upper Hutt and Whanganui and has called Te Whanganui-a-Tara (Wellington) home for the last ten years. She is a youth worker, activist and student of Māori Laws and Philosophy at Te Wānanga o Raukawa. She is involved with takatāpui / LGBTIQ communities and is currently working with two other young women to produce AUNTIES – a one off magazine sharing the experiences of women and non-binary people in political organising.

Lyndy McIntyre has over 30 years’ experience and commitment to the trade union movement, as a delegate, organiser and campaigner.  Much of that time has been spent in campaigns to lift low wages, most recently in the Living Wage Movement. Lyndy now works as a community organiser, coordinating the Wellington regional movement and supporting local unions, faith groups and community organisations to build alliances to campaign for the Living Wage.

We will also report in on the year, announce the Bert Roth Award short-list and winner, and elect a Committee for the coming year.
